Few hairstyles are as timeless, versatile and related as a fringe. In each decade fringes have discovered a method to make face-framing look lovely, from the ‘60s Audrey fringe to ’70s curtain bangs, voluminous ‘80s fringes, wispy ’90s fringes or side-swept ’00s side-bangs.

Led by the likes of Suki Waterhouse, Sienna Miller and Daisy Edgar Jones, floaty attire and floaty fringes are making a comeback. Hair-wise, the bottom line is a softly ruffled form (nothing too sharp or blunt). The wonder is that it makes this fringe way more versatile. It may be worn straight throughout (and full and thicker wanting) or parted to look nearer to a curtain fringe. It needs to be “quite full, with some separation (but not too wispy),” explains pro hair stylist and Aveda educator, Leah Hill, who notes it can be shaped into a few different styles. Paired with a mussy, free-spirited texture, the boho fringe is set to be a headliner.

The curtain fringe
No surprises, the curtain fringe is still leading the charge. The universally-flattering, Brigitte Bardot-inspired, ‘70s style fringe is the perfect entry level cut. Rather than chopping your strands straight across from temple to temple, this offers a lower commitment option that flicks out at the ends to perfectly frame eyes and cheekbones. “It starts mid way between the eyebrow and the bridge of the nose, but has more length at the sides so you can tuck it back,” explains Dom. “It has a flowy vibe, rather than being a solid bang,” he adds.
